JOHN LEANED UP AGAINST the rough wall of the church, with Walter at his side. He knew being there wouldn’t do much in the way of helping with the investigation, but he had no new leads and wanted to offer his condolences to the family once more.

Ted’s wife, Helen, had spotted him moments earlier, and was crossing the room to meet him. She’d been crying, but was doing a good job of hiding it. John watched as she knelt down in front of her two daughters and whispered something he couldn’t hear. When she resumed her walk, they stayed where they were, clinging to each other.

“Mrs. Novak,” he greeted her when she reached him. “I’m so sorry for your loss.”

“Thank you,” she replied, choking on a hidden tear. “It’s been hard.”

“I can imagine. How are your girls doing?”

John had spoken to Helen a few times since her husband’s body was found, but in all that time he’d never seen her children. Whenever he was interviewing her at the house, they remained shut up in their room and refused to come down. Despite the circumstances, John was glad to see them out of that house.

“They’re doing better. My youngest still doesn’t understand. It’s difficult trying to explain that their daddy was killed by a—” She couldn’t get the words out. “You need to find the person who did this,” she said, losing the battle with her emotions. “You need to find him. You need to kill him.”

“Helen, please—” He tried to calm her, but she cut him off. She was getting louder and beginning to draw attention to them.

“Don’t you dare tell me to calm down. If one more person tells me to calm down, I’m going to lose it.”

John was going to speak, but thought better when he saw the crazed look in her eyes. He decided it was best to let her say what she needed to.

“If you don’t find the bastard who took my Ted away from me, then I swear to God... I will find him myself and put a bullet through his brain.”

Before John could think of an appropriate response, Helen turned on her heel and returned to her children. Overwhelmed by the confrontation, John plopped himself down on the nearest pew, and put his head in his hands. When he looked up again, he noticed Alyson standing a few yards away. Her rigid stance and intense glaring told him she was furious. She waved an angry hand and beckoned him over. He wasn’t sure if it was out of fear or exhaustion, but he didn’t move. She rolled her eyes and marched toward him. Leaning down to his level, she hissed in his ear.

“Johnathan Ellis Hoffman. I have no intention of creating a scene and ruining this poor man’s funeral, but if you don’t get off your ass and come with me this second, I’m going to make sure that every member of the press in this room is aware of the fact that the FBI is withholding information and covering it up with makeup.
